The Ann Richards Team for Young Women Archers
The Ann Richards Team for Young Women Archers
ARS Archery is bringing the spirit, determination, and resolve of the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders to the world of interscholastic competitive archery. The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP®) hosts local, state and national championships annually, and we are taking aim at the being the best!
While ARS Archery is a new organization this 24-25 school year, we have arrived here via a path of successes. Seven of our 24-25 archers were Texas and US National elementary team champions, and we have had individual archers on the podium at the Texas State (1st, 3rd) and US National (2nd, 3rd) Championships! 🏆
We are confident that we can build a winning culture here at ARS, and are excited to see our archers-in-blue compete with many other amazing Austin ISD schools, including Kealing Middle School, Macallum High School, LASA, Magellan International, and two-time state champion Lamar Middle School. LET'S GO!!!
ARS archers competed in 23-24 exclusively as individuals, and we are looking to grow and secure the minimum number of athletes required to form a team (12). With the support of Principal Griffith, Coach Brown, and Coach Jenkins, we're on track for an exciting 24-25 season. Learn how you can directly impact our success this season.

Archery is about much more than shooting arrows, and as parents and caregivers we've seen benefits far beyond the joy of aiming at and hitting a target. Archery is an excellent sport for enhancing focus and concentration. The process of aiming and shooting requires archers to clear their minds of distractions and concentrate fully on the task at hand. This intense focus helps these young archers develop mental clarity and cognitive control, which can be beneficial in everyday life as they transition from children to young adutls. As archers practice, they learn to maintain their concentration for extended periods, which can improve their ability to focus on studies or other hobbies or activities requiring sustained attention.
The mind-body connection is another significant mental health benefit of archery. The sport requires precise physical movements coordinated with mental focus, fostering a strong awareness of one’s body and its actions. This heightened sense of body awareness can lead to improved physical health and a better understanding of how mental states affect physical performance. By engaging in archery, our students can improve their ability to sense their own movement, force, and position in space, and develop a greater sense of control over their physical and mental states.
Archery also promotes social interaction and patience, which are crucial for mental well-being. Participating in an archery team allows our students to meet new people, share experiences, and build a sense of community. Archery is an extremely inclusive sport - no need to be the strongest, tallest, fastest, most agile athlete to make the team; anyone can be an archer! The sport also teaches patience and persistence, as mastering archery skills takes time and consistent effort. These qualities can translate to other areas of life, helping our students develop resilience and a positive outlook. Additionally, the act of regularly practicing archery can increase self-confidence and mindfulness, as archers see their skills improve and learn to stay present in the moment. This combination of social support, personal growth, and mindfulness can significantly enhance mental health and overall well-being, and have an overall positive impact on our Young Women Leaders.
